Two men have been arrested after they went into a police station in Birmingham with a gas canister and made demands.

The men, both in their 40s, went into the main reception of the Bournville police station at about 04:35 BST on Saturday, West Midlands Police said.

The station and adjacent roads were closed for a number of hours.

The men were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage with intent to endanger life.

Ch Insp Ian Marsh said: "This was a serious incident which posed a risk not only to the two men but emergency services trying to deal with the incident and those living or working in the area.

"Thankfully the matter was resolved peacefully and these two men are helping us with our inquiries."

The police said Bournville station would remain closed to the public whilst the main reception area was examined by officers.
