Thousands of people have taken part in Birmingham's Eid Mela celebration.

The free annual event at Cannon Hill Park marks the end of the Muslim period of fasting and celebrates Islamic culture, entertainment, sport and food.

Organiser Zafar Iqbal said he estimated a total of about 20,000 people would attend.

"This is the first opportunity to celebrate and we're going to celebrate in the park with the whole community," he said.

The festival has been organised by Birmingham City Council in association with the Muslim community.

City councillor Mr Iqbal, chair of Birmingham Eid Mela steering group, said it was a "fantastic opportunity" for people to come together.

The event, now in its 14th year, started at 13:00 BST.
