Birmingham Tesco evacuated over fire in self-service checkout machine
A Tesco store was evacuated when a fire broke out in a self-service checkout machine.
The blaze started in the shop in New Street in Birmingham city centre during the lunchtime rush.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said it sent paramedics and a hazard team following reports of smoke and a possible 'chemical incident'.
One patient - believed to be a Tesco employee - was assessed and discharged, a spokesperson said.
West Midlands Fire Service said it received a call from police shortly after 12:30.
The blaze was small, it said, and out by the time a crew arrived at the scene where a 'small amount of people' were complaining about irritation.
Engineers from Tesco attended.
A fire service spokesperson said the fire's cause was not yet known.
