Workman trapped in collapsed trench in Bradford dies

A 23-year-old man has died after being trapped for several hours under a pile of rubble in a trench in Bradford.

The man is believed to have been part of a team of contractors working on the trench in Bingley Road, Heaton, when it caved in at about 1100 BST.

Some of the man's family were at the scene while emergency services worked to try to save him.

Police inquiries are under way to establish how it happened. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that the body of a 23-year-old local man has been recovered from the trench.

"It is believed the man had been working in the trench at the time of the incident.

"Inquiries are currently ongoing to establish how the events came about."

Police, the ambulance service and firefighters worked together into the late afternoon to try and save the man.

The police spokeswoman said the man's identity would not be released until a post-mortem examination was carried out on Tuesday.
