Rothwell house fire: Boy, 5, dies in hospital

A five-year-old boy has died in hospital after being seriously injured in a house fire.

Alex Clarke was taken for emergency surgery in Manchester following the fire at his home in Second Avenue, Rothwell, Leeds, on Sunday evening.

West Yorkshire Police said his mother, brother and sister were also in the house at the time but were unharmed.

An investigation is under way to establish the cause of the fire, which started upstairs at about 20:30 GMT.

Two members of the public tried to enter the house but were fought back by heat and smoke, the fire service said. They were checked by paramedics at the scene.

Alex died in hospital on Monday and his family are being supported by specially-trained officers.

West Yorkshire Fire Service said crews from Rothwell and Hunslet arrived at the scene within minutes and used four breathing apparatus and two hose reels to fight the upstairs blaze.

Smoke alarms were fitted and working at the house, the service added.
