A TV presenter from Bristol has been chosen to lead a special prayer vigil during Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the UK.

Sherrie Eugene will lead a congregation of 80,000 people at Hyde Park in London on 18 September - the vigil will also be televised.

Ms Eugene said: "I expect I'll be nervous - very. I'm told I'll only be yards away from the Pope."

She is one of only three people to be chosen to lead the prayers.

Father Michael McAndrew, from the Clifton Diocese, said: "It's wonderful for us here in the west country to have Sherrie Eugene - one of our own - leading the nation in prayer."
