A woman has died in a house fire in the Knowle area of Bristol.

Emergency services were called to the three-storey property in Wells Road early on Saturday morning.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said it was believed the woman was the only person in the house at the time.

"She was rescued from the property and attempts were made to resuscitate her, but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene," he said.

The A37, Wells Road, remains closed near to the Broadwalk shopping centre.

The spokesman added: "It is with great sadness that the female was pronounced dead at the scene and our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family.

"At this moment, the cause of the fire is unknown and specialists from the police and fire investigation teams are in the process of determining the cause."
