A woman has died in a house fire in Abbots Leigh, near Bristol.

Emergency services were called to what was described as a "severe fire" in Dennyview Road, just off the A369, at about 1315 BST.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the woman's body was discovered by firefighters when they entered the large detached house.

Investigations into the cause are continuing but the fire is not thought to be suspicious at this stage.

'Power cut'

Crews were expected to remain at the scene damping down pockets of fire overnight.

"Power cables had to be disconnected for a time to allow the turntable ladder and crews to work safely," the fire brigade spokesman said.

"The investigation is ongoing and a full inspection of the property will take place tomorrow [Thursday].

"The blaze had gone through the central stair case and affected the roof quite badly but because it was a detached property the fire was contained.

"This was a very severe fire, there are no suspicious circumstances at present and we're treating it as an accident at the moment," the spokesman added.
