Police believe the woman may have fallen from the third floor

A woman has been found fatally injured below a block of flats in Bristol.

Police are investigating the possibility she may have fallen from a window on the third floor of the flats.

The woman, thought to be 45, was found near Backfields Court, off Backfields Lane, in St Pauls at about 0600 BST.

She had head and chest injuries and was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary, where she was pronounced dead. A man has been arrested in connection with the death, said police.

Det Ch Insp Gareth Bevan said: "At the moment it's very unclear as to exactly what happened but I believe the woman may have fallen from an upstairs flat.

"We are treating it as suspicious at the moment."

He appealed for witnesses.
