A major commuter route in Bristol had to be shut for an air ambulance to land on it to attend to a climber who had been injured in a cliff-face fall.

The A4 Portway was closed for a short while on Monday afternoon while paramedics and fire crew reached the man on the slopes of the Avon Gorge.

The climber suffered a badly fractured wrist and cuts and bruises when rocks gave way beneath him.

The man, an experienced climber, was later taken to hospital in Bristol.
