Part of a park in south Bristol is to be transformed into a community garden.

Dame Emily Park in Dean Lane, Bedminster, has been chosen as one of 20 throughout the UK to be part of the Greener Living Spaces project.

A Bristol City Council spokeswoman said it was hoped the development would especially appeal to older residents.

"An area will be cleared of its hard surface and replaced with trees, plants and seating to offer a quiet area to sit, relax and chat," she said.

"Members of the local community will be involved in the initial design concept, construction and planting phases as well as maintaining the garden once complete."

It is hoped the work will be completed by summer 2011.

The project is a partnership between Bristol City Council, Marks and Spencer, and Groundworks.

Funding for the scheme has come from profits made through the sale of 5p carrier bags at the food and clothing retailer.
