A new vicar will be inducted in Thornbury later after the Reverend John Suddards was found stabbed to death.

The Reverend Dr Jan van der Lely was previously an assistant curate in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Dr van der Lely said it was "a great honour" to be called to serve as vicar.

Mr Suddards, 59, was found dead in the vicarage in Thornbury in February. A 47-year-old man has been charged with his murder.

Mr Suddards had taken up the post last July, having come from the Diocese of Chelmsford in Essex.

Dr van der Lely will be welcomed into the parish by the Bishop of Gloucester at a service at St Mary's Church.

"The people in the parish are at a stage now when they are ready to look to the future," she said.
