Bristol submits new European Green Capital bid

Bristol has submitted its third application to be named the most environmentally-friendly city in Europe.

The city lost its bid to become the European Green Capital for 2014 in June when it came runner-up to Copenhagen.

Bristol lost out to Stockholm in the 2010 contest.

The Bristol Green Capital Partnership will now attempt to win the award for the city in 2015. The winner will be announced at the end of June 2013.

It is the only UK city to have been shortlisted for the award.

The award is judged in two stages, the first of which is a technical assessment that looks at 12 subject areas such as energy, water consumption, waste, transport and green spaces.

A council spokesman said: "If we get through to the shortlist in May next year, we are then judged on our vision for the city, our ability to communicate on sustainability issues and finally our plan for 2015."

He said: "If Bristol wins it will provide a platform for new investment and jobs in the low-carbon economy."
