An MP from the Bristol area has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Conservative Jack Lopresti said the cancer was identified following hospital treatment over the past three months for suspected appendicitis.

The Filton and Bradley Stoke MP said the "future prognosis was positive" and he was about to begin a three-month course of chemotherapy.

He said he was unsure how the treatment would affect him but hoped to return to "full-time action" in September.

Mr Lopresti, 43, thanked the staff at Frenchay and Southmead hospitals after an operation which lead to the cancer diagnosis.

He said: "Most of the cancer was removed during my recent operation and in my consultant's own words they will 'mop up' any remaining cancer cells and are aiming for a complete cure and recovery."
