Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing explosions after "loud bangs" were heard near a pub in the early hours.

Bomb disposal experts were called to Appletree Court in Worle, where a 100m cordon was put in place near the Summerhouse pub.

The cordon was in place for about five hours, police said.

A lane where an explosive device was found was closed while a house was searched, but has since re-opened.

Avon and Somerset Police said it was not being treated as terrorism and the arrested men, aged 20 and 21, were helping with inquiries.

Det Insp Rich Horsfall said a precautionary search of a second property in the Forth Avenue area of Portishead was taking place and "directly linked to the earlier incident".

He said: "We do not believe there is any risk to the wider public and we'll continue to work with our emergency service colleagues and the EOD as our inquiry progresses.

"We will do our best to communicate and ensure that residents in the local community are kept informed as much as possible.

"Our priority will always be public safety and with that in mind we have to take precautionary measures when dealing with investigations of this type."
