Online retailer Amazon is recruiting more than 1,000 staff at its "fulfilment centre" in Peterborough.

The temporary contracts are being created to deal with increased demand over the Christmas period.

The company is recruiting a total of 10,000 extra staff at its distribution centres around the UK.

Catherine McDermott, director of operations, said thousands of staff initially on temporary contracts had moved on to permanent roles.

"On our busiest shopping day last Christmas, we saw customers order a total of three million items during one 24-hour period at a rate of 35 items every second," she added.

In September the company announced plans to create more than 2,000 permanent jobs in the UK over the next two years, in addition to 600 posts at its new distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead.
