Murdered Bedfordshire man died from gunshot wound to back

A 36-year-old father killed in a village in Cambridgeshire on New Year's Day died from a gunshot wound to the back, post-mortem tests have found.

Jessie Smith, known as Jess, of Common Road, Potton, Bedfordshire, was found dead in a car in Burwell at 02:00 GMT.

Cambridgeshire Police have launched a murder inquiry and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Mr Smith's family said in a statement: "Jess was a lovely husband and you couldn't find a better father."

Police said a cordon remains in place in First Drove in the village, where the body was found, and police searches and patrols will continue in the area.

Det Ch Insp Jason Gordon said: "We continue to treat this as an isolated incident and are still keen to hear from anyone who has any information about this man's death.

"Specialist officers are providing support for the family at this difficult time and it is vital we trace whoever is responsible."
