A man has died in a fire on a Spanish fishing vessel about 160 miles (255km) south west of the Isles of Scilly.

Falmouth Coastguard co-ordinated an operation to help the Rey De Olaya after an alert at 1725 GMT on Saturday.

The fire, which broke out in an accommodation block, was brought under control by the crew.

The 92ft (28m) vessel, which had 16 crew on board, was being towed to Spain by two nearby ships, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said.

The Falmouth station broadcast a mayday alert, requesting vessels in the area to head for the scene.

The Rey De Olaya was being towed to Burela by a fishing vessel, the Anxuela, and another ship, the Eurofin, which responded to the mayday, the MCA said.
