A Devon council has returned £840,000 to the government which it had been granted for a travellers' site.

Torridge Council had earmarked a site at Derriton near Holsworthy for seven pitches, but said it halted plans after residents said they did not want it.

Plymouth City Council said it considered attempting taking the grant after Torridge returned it last month.

Plymouth added it did not have time to consider options before a deadline at the start of the financial year.

Torridge Council originally scrapped the proposals for the permanent pitches at the Derriton site near the end of 2010.

It had started looking for an alternative, but said it eventually decided to pay the money back so other authorities could use it for a similar project.
