Lifeboat rescues trapped teenagers from Newquay Island

Teenagers having a barbecue on an island had to be rescued after being cut off by the tide in Cornwall.

The group of eight girls, aged 14 and 15, were at the base of Newquay Island on Saturday evening, coastguards have confirmed.

The incident happened at 17:55 GMT on Saturday and the girls were rescued by two lifeboats from the town.

Falmouth Coastguards said they were planning on heading back to shore when the tide went out.
