A suspected arson attack has damaged the roof of a primary school in west Cornwall.

The fire, at Heamoor Community Primary School in Penzance, broke out at about 23:40 BST on Wednesday, Cornwall Fire Service said.

About 20 firefighters from St Just, Falmouth, St Ives and Penzance were called to the blaze, which destroyed about a quarter of the roof.

Witnesses said 20ft (6m) high flames came from the single-storey building.

Firefighters said they limited the spread of the fire in the roof, managing to confine it to an area mainly above a kitchen, an office and a store.

There was some smoke and water damage, but it did not appear to affect classrooms, the fire service said.

Crews left the school at about 02:00 BST.

A joint fire and police investigation is being carried out into the cause.
