'Loan shark' threatens St Austell woman with violence

An illegal money lender who threatened a woman when she could not meet her repayments is being investigated.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the 30-year-old woman from St Austell borrowed cash from a loan shark when she got into financial difficulties.

When she was unable to make the payments, she was subjected to intimidation and threats of violence.

Police asked anyone in the St Austell area who has been approached by people offering cash loans to contact them.

The force urged people not to accept any loans unless they are from a "registered and respectable financial institution".

Directgov - the government's advice website - has information and advice about loan sharks as well as a confidential phone and text service for people to report illegal activity.
