A project to expand one of the largest independent libraries in the UK has begun after a local benefactor donated £600,000.

The Morrab Library, in Penzance, was founded in 1818 and is run primarily by volunteers.

Dennis Myner donated the cash after being involved with the building for more than 40 years.

A Cornwall Council spokesperson said it was one of the largest of 30 independent libraries in the UK.

Mr Myner has donated the money which was from his sister, Patricia Eschen, who died in 2010.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
