Cornwall's jobless figure falls

There has been a fall in the number of people out of work and claiming benefits in Cornwall, according to official figures.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) said 9,631 people were registered last month - a fall of 1,074 from March.

The April figure represents 2.9% of the county's population - down from 3.2%

Although the number of claimants fell between March and April, the percentage of the population not working increased by 0.1% from 3.1% in April last year.

The number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance has fallen nationally by 13,700 to 1.59 million in the past month, the ONS said.
