Up to 2,000 jobs are to be created after online grocer Ocado confirmed plans for a large new warehouse in north Warwickshire.

The company, which delivers food for Waitrose, is to build a £200m, 35-acre distribution centre at Birch Coppice Business Park near Tamworth.

North Warwickshire Borough Council has agreed to an extension to the business park, confirming Ocado's plans.

It is thought the complex is due for completion towards the end of 2012.

A spokesman for IM Properties, which is working with Ocado on the deal, said the distribution facility was designed to process between 180,000 and 200,000 customer orders per week.

The business park, half-a-mile from junction 10 of the M42 motorway, was chosen ahead of the former Peugeot vehicle assembly plant at Ryton in Coventry and a development site close to the M69 in Hinckley, Leicestershire, they added.
