Large fire at engineering plant near Coventry Airport

A woodwork engineering factory has been destroyed by a large fire.

About 75 firefighters were called to Ney Ltd, on Siskin Drive near the A45 and Coventry Airport, at 17:05 BST. There are no reports of any injuries.

Callers to BBC Coventry and Warwickshire said smoke could be seen from the M1 and the Belfry golf club. The airport is operating as normal.

Witnesses said the shell of the building had started to collapse.

Mick Birch, from West Midlands Fire Service, said the cause of the fire was not yet known and crews would remain at the site overnight.

Twelve people were inside when the alarm was first raised but evacuated safely, he added.

A 400m exclusion zone, set up as a precautionary measure because of two acetylene cylinders inside the factory which could overheat, was later reduced.

Residents living nearby were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
