A man has been jailed for life for murdering his friend in a drunken attack at a flat in Coventry.

Jason O'Brien, 39, beat Michael Carrielies, 49, to death at an apartment in Meadow House on Upper Spon Street on 28 November 2013.

Mr Carrielies died from severe injuries to his head and neck, police said.

O'Brien, of Crescent Avenue, Coventry, had denied murder. He was sentenced to a minimum of 17 years at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday.

Det Insp Ian Iliffe said: "We will never know exactly what happened inside Meadow House on that morning, or why O'Brien brutally killed his friend Michael.

"My hope is that the verdict and sentence brings some closure to his family who I know are heartbroken at their loss."
