Man admits Workington hotel arson attack

An 18-year-old man has admitted starting a fire which led to the evacuation of a hotel and caused £75,000 worth of damage.

Carl McGuirk was arrested after fire ripped through the Cumberland Hotel, in Station Road, Workington, in April.

McGuirk admitted arson and being reckless as to whether life was endangered at Carlisle Crown Court.

He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 16 August.

An 82-year-old woman - one of the hotel's permanent residents - had to be lifted to safety after firefighters smashed the window of her room, the hearing was told.

McGuirk, who had been living at the hotel at the time of the attack, had pleaded not guilty to the more serious charge of arson with intent to endanger lives.
