Boy and grandfather's Lake District fell rescue

A 10-year-old boy got lost late at night in a forest while attempting to get help for his grandfather who was stranded on a Lake District fell.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was alerted after the pair failed to turn up at Ennerdale Youth Hostel on Saturday night.

The 72-year-old, who had fallen near the summit of Haycock and was unable to walk, was rescued in the early hours.

His grandson had earlier been located on a forest track in Ennerdale.

He had been going to seek help.

The grandfather was stretchered down to below the cloud line and airlifted to West Cumberland Hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia.
