Carlisle man jailed for cider bottle attack on ex-lover

A Carlisle man who attacked his former girlfriend with a cider bottle after seeing her in a nightclub in the city has been jailed for five years.

Matthew Watson, 22, of Balfour Road, attacked Hannah Shield in Party Party.

He hit her over the head with a bottle three times before attacking bystander Niall Scott who went to help Ms Shield, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

Watson pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and unlawful wounding.

The judge gave Mr Scott a £500 reward for his "extreme bravery".

The court heard Ms Shield was left with cuts that needed several stitches.
