Three house break-ins in south Cumbria in the space of three hours may have been carried out by the same man, police said.
During all three burglaries on Tuesday afternoon a man was disturbed by the elderly residents and fled before police arrived.
The raids happened at homes in Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston between noon and 1500 BST.
Money was taken during one break-in. The man was in his 30s with dark hair.
Det Sgt George Cubiss, of Cumbria Police, said: "We are keeping an open mind but due to the unusual nature of the three reports we are treating them as linked at the moment.
"We are asking elderly people to take a few extra precautions like being vigilant, ensure their windows and doors are locked securely and be wary of unexpected doorstep callers."
The break-ins happened in Chiltern Crescent in Barrow; Rawlinson Street, Dalton; and later at an address in Fell Close, Ulverston.
