A man has been jailed for eight years after being found guilty of raping a woman in Cumbria.

Paul Richardson attacked the woman in her home on 15 January this year, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

The 49-year-old, of Park Terrace, Maryport, was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for 15 years.

Cumbria Police praised the victim for her courage during her ordeal and hoped she could rebuild her life and said Richardson belonged behind bars.

Richardson had denied the attack but was found guilty during a six-day trial.

Det Insp Adrian Johnson, of West Cumbria CID who led the investigation, said: "I am pleased that we have been able to ensure a dangerous man has been taken off our streets and put behind bars.

"The victim of this attack will continue to feel the devastating effects of Richardson's crime long after this case has finished but I hope that the result at court can help her to begin to rebuild her life.

"Our specially trained officers have worked closely with her throughout the investigation and the subsequent court case, the whole team has nothing but admiration for the courage she has displayed in coming forward."
