Two men have been arrested after a pursuit in Carlisle, during which two police vehicles were rammed and a family car was hit.

The stolen Hyundai Getz was spotted by officers on Sybil Street on Sunday.

It reversed into their vehicle and made off, pursued by officers from the tactical support unit, before hitting a car carrying a woman and two children.

In attempting to escape, it then rammed another police vehicle. Four officers suffered minor whiplash injuries.

The female driver of the other car was treated for shock.

A 22-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle, making off without payment, affray, dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

Another, also aged 22, was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and making off without payment.
