Police warning over diesel thefts in south Cumbria

Police have warned the public to be vigilant and secure their fuel tanks following several diesel and heating oil thefts in south Cumbria.

Since November, there have been 15 instances where commercial premises, rural properties, homes, farms and holiday homes were targeted.

The "lucrative" thefts were made easier because tanks were often tucked away out of sight, police said.

People are urged to fit secure locks and report any suspicious activity.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "To steal large amounts of fuel, thieves will need transport so they are often in large vehicles that have the appropriate containers or can be adapted to hold large volumes of fuel.

"We are asking people to be neighbourly and keep a look-out for any people or vehicles lurking in rural areas.

"It normally takes a considerable period of time to steal fuel, so it is likely that local people would notice something out of the ordinary."
