Homes at flood risk after cable thefts in Cumbria

Homes have been left at risk of flooding after thieves stole electrical cable from a Cumbria pumping station.

The station, on Frederick Street in Barrow, keeps rainwater out of about 100 properties, but is out of action following the thefts.

United Utilities engineers are working to get power reconnected before it rains, and high-volume fire brigade pumps are being brought to the site.

A spokesman described it as a "race against time".

Paul Rigby said: "We are working hard to restore the pumping station as fast as we can, but we have to do everything we can to prepare for the possibility that this may not happen before the rains come."
