Woman sexually attacked in Carlisle street

A woman suffered a "frightening ordeal" when she was sexually assaulted while walking home from a night out in Carlisle, police have said.

The 29-year-old was approached from behind by a man as she walked along the city's London Road in the early hours of Friday.

He ran off when a member of the public came to the woman's assistance.

Cumbria Police described the attacker as white, in his late 20s, and wearing a short sleeve top and jeans.

Det Ch Insp Jason Hudson said: "This was a frightening ordeal for the victim who acted bravely and fought off the man and shouted for help.

"The assault happened in the middle of a busy road and we believe that at least one vehicle will have passed the scene and witnessed what would have looked like a struggle."
