Cumbria GPs to offer exercise support

Patients who would benefit from more exercise but have difficulty getting started are to be given a helping hand by doctors in Cumbria.

An exercise referral programme has been set up with Carlisle Leisure Ltd.

During the 12-week course, patients will be offered exercise support and tips aimed at helping them to carry on being more active after it finishes.

The service is available in the Wigton, Maryport, Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington areas.

Dr Fayyaz Chaudhri, lead commissioning GP for Allerdale, said: "For many people who have suffered a stroke, have heart problems, have diabetes or are obese, becoming more active can be a daunting prospect for fear of not knowing where to start.

"We already know that this form of programme supports people in this type of situation by providing professional knowledge, to help boost confidence and also help people plan realistic targets which they can aim for to continue with after their programme ends."
