Inquiry into death of woman at Whitehaven Harbour

A woman has died after being pulled from the water at Whitehaven Harbour in Cumbria, police said.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, was rescued by emergency crews after reports that she had got into difficulty on Monday afternoon.

Police officers went into the water and pulled her out close to the western side of the harbour's outer wall.

Cumbria Police said she was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

A force spokesman said efforts were being made to formally identify the woman and inform her family.
