Warning over 'at risk' Millom and Haverigg bus routes

Cumbria County Council said it was concerned over the future of bus services after an operator announced it would be stopping some rural routes.

Stagecoach said from May it would no longer be running services between Millom, Barrow and Haverigg.

It also said it was scaling back services in Barrow town centre blaming the government's decision to reduce the Bus Service Operators' Grant by 20%.

Cumbria County Council blamed a nationwide under-funding of services.

A spokesman said: "The paring down of commercial services is likely to put further pressure on the council's budget for supporting bus services.

"Therefore, even if the Barrow area services that Stagecoach has given notice on are saved, then other services - in all likelihood rural ones where there are few passengers relying on the service will no longer be sustainable."

The council said it would retender the contract to try and find another bus operator.
