Talkin Tarn open water swimmers must register

A council in Cumbria is to introduce a rule to try to keep open water swimmers safe.

From April, anyone wanting to use Talkin Tarn as a training water must register with Carlisle City Council's Country Park.

They will provided with brightly coloured hats and be encouraged to use the facility at the same time as other swimmers in a bid to improve safety.

New steps will also be built near the Alex boathouse to improve water access.

A council spokesman said: "Swimmers will need to register with the Country Park and agree to a set of terms and conditions mainly focusing on health and safety.

"In the past, swimmers have randomly used the tarn for swimming, but as use of the water has increased over the years there is the need to better regulate this to ensure the safety of all water users."
