MPs given Cumbria fire control centre petition

Members of Cumbria's Fire Brigades Union are taking a petition opposing the closure of the county's fire control centre to Westminster.

More than 21,500 have signed the petition against outsourcing emergency fire calls to Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service, 150 miles away.

Objectors say the move will put lives at risk because the operators will not have "crucial" local knowledge.

The plan, approved by Cumbria County Council, is due to take effect in June.
