Eight fire engines are being used to put out a fire at a chip shop in the centre of Bowness on Windermere.

The blaze started in Vinegar Jones on Royal Square sometime before 10:30 BST.

Police have cordoned off the area and traffic is being directed off the A592 between the Crag Brow roundabout and Church Street.

Louise McMahon was there at the time and said: "It all happened within a minute. A chip pan caught fire, and everyone just had to get out."

Mrs McMahon from Love the Lakes, a shop across the street was talking to the owner of the chip shop at the time.

She said: "There is nothing we can do, we're just stood watching the fire crews trying to dampen down now, and hoping it wont spread to any other buildings."
