Cumbria M6 crash kills woman

A woman has died in a crash involving a car and a lorry on the M6 in Cumbria.

The crash happened at about 15:40 BST on Thursday on the southbound carriageway close to junction 39, Shap.

The female passenger of the car, believed to be in her 30s and from the Glasgow area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, a 57-year-old man from Glasgow, suffered serious injuries and was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

He is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in a stable condition.

A detour of more than 20 miles was set up on the A6 towards Kendal after the carriageway was closed for five hours.

The 40-year-old HGV driver from Carlisle was unharmed.

Witnesses have been asked to contact Cumbria Police.
