Cumbrian couple killed in bridge crash are named

An elderly couple who died when their car plunged off a bridge into a small river in Cumbria have been named.

Alan Murray, 73 and his wife Barbara, 74, of Scattergate Crescent in Appleby, were travelling towards Appleby at about 15:30 BST on Saturday.

The vehicle left the road, travelled down an embankment and turned upside down in a beck beneath the road. The couple were declared dead at the scene.

Firefighters found the car upside down in Hoff Beck, near Appleby.

The road was closed for four hours to allow investigators from Cumbria Constabulary to conduct a full examination of the scene and for the vehicle to be recovered from the water.

Cumbria Police are appealing for witnesses.
