Carlisle WWII bomb detonated

A controlled explosion has been carried out on an artillery shell dug up by workmen at a building site in Cumbria.

The find, at Trinity School in Carlisle on Saturday, prompted an evacuation of a nearby sports centre.

An army bomb disposal team, the Royal Logistical Corps from Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire, was called to the scene.

The 18lb World War II device was taken to a playing field where it was safely detonated.
