A Carlisle man has admitted causing the death of an 87-year-old great grandfather by dangerous driving.

Malcolm John Russell, 45, of Hopes Hill Drive, Carlisle, was charged following the death of John Lomas on 4 June 2011.

Mr Lomas, from Threapland, Aspatria, was airlifted to the Cumberland Infirmary, where he later died.

Russell pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. He has been remanded on bail until he is sentenced on November 9.

Judge Paul Batty QC told him prison was "virtually inevitable", and banned him from driving in the meantime.

The crash between Mr Lomas' Toyota Yaris car and Russell's BMW took place on the A596 at Scales, between Aspatria and Wigton.
