Cumbria snowfall to ease but ice warning issued

Motorists and pedestrians are being urged to take care in icy conditions as snowfalls begin to ease off in Cumbria.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert, with strong winds predicted on Saturday but with snow due to lighten.

Cumbria County Council has treated all major routes, as well as some minor roads which are not routinely gritted.

Up to 2cm of snow are predicted in the region on Friday and Saturday as temperatures continue to dip below zero.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Although some further slight snowfalls are likely, the focus switches to ice.

"Sub-zero temperatures will persist over existing snow cover for many areas and spreading back into parts of the southwest towards daybreak on Saturday."
