Missing John Allen 'may have tried to help his dog out of water'

A missing 76-year-old man may have entered a Cumbria waterway in a bid to help his dog, police believe.

John Allen from Preston, was last seen entering the Ravenglass estuary, in Cumbria, at about 09:00 BST on Monday.

An underwater search was carried out earlier with a shoreline search due to take place at low tide.

Insp Mark Wear, of Cumbria Police, said it was now thought that Mr Allen "may have been trying to help his dog out of the water".

"The dog is fine. However, Mr Allen has not been seen since," he said.

"We had around 100 people out searching for Mr Allen last night and we are appealing to the local community to get in touch with any relevant information they may have," added Insp Wear.
