Work to transform a former fire station in Cumbria into a £1m arts centre has taken a step forward.

The building on Carlisle's Warwick Street will feature space for workshops, galleries and entertainment when it is completed.

Construction work on the site has got under way with the scheme due for completion in April 2015.

Carlisle City Council approved the plan last year and initial works got under way in June.

Steve Dunn, arts officer for the council, said the building would retain its "industrial feel".
