Roadworks costing £2.3m are starting in Penrith.

Cumbria County Council says the project will improve access to the Gilwilly Industrial Estate and Eden Business Park.

Work on the A592 will include an extra lane for southbound traffic, a revised layout and a new pedestrian crossing.

The council's Labour cabinet member for highways Keith Little said the project could "help pave the way for future business growth".

The second phase of the scheme will begin towards the summer and involve construction of two new roundabouts on the B5288 Newton Road.
